Retailers see pet food shortages due to pandemic demand

Independent retailers are experiencing short supplies of pet food following increased demand during the pandemic.

The availability issues were previously reported to have affected major supermarkets, but wholesale and symbol group bosses told RN the shortages have extended to independent convenience and primarily impact pouches of dog and cat food.

They said the issues were being experienced with Mars Petcare and Nestle Purina products. Mars Petcare UK general manager Helen Warren- Piper said: “The shortage of pet food pouches is due to an increase in demand for pet food. Mars Petcare is working to meet the demand. To do this, we have made a significant investment into our manufacturing network, including our UK Melton Mowbray pet food plant.”
