Your shelves are next: Government investigates plain packaging for confectionery, soft drinks and crisps

The government is to explore proposals to apply plain packaging to confectionery, crisps and soft drinks following recommendations from an independent think tank.

In its proposals published last week, the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) claimed the move would help prevent obesity.

It also called for the soft drinks sugar levy to be extended to cakes, confectionery and other sweetened drinks.

The government’s chief medical officer, Sally Davies, said: “This new proposal from IPPR learns lessons from tobacco control. It has the potential to be part of the solution to the obesity crisis.”
