Raj Bains, owner of One Stop Lower Road in Faversham has been revealed as one of the first UK franchisees of on-demand grocery delivery service Getir.

Several sources confirmed to Better Retailing that the Kent-based retailer had bagged a UK franchise agreement to operate a Getir dark store using its ‘ultra-convenience’ grocery delivery model, whereby goods are delivered in 10 minutes or less.

A message from Bains, seen by Better Retailing celebrated the franchise win, stating: “[I’m] officially the second franchisee outside of Turkey!”

Asked to comment, Getir confirmed “the franchising of the first few of its gstores in London.”

Getir home delivery app is seeking franchise partners

A statement from the firm sent to Better Retailing read: “Since launching in the UK in January 2021, Getir has opened over 90 gstores and always had the ambition of creating a franchise model to help grow the business as effectively as possible.  After attending the British Franchise Exhibition at the NEC in Birmingham in September 2021, Getir has received interest from hundreds of potential business owners, looking at both existing gstore sites and future ones.”

The Turkish tech firm began advertising for franchisees in mid-september this year, with the hopes of switching ‘as many as possible’ of its ‘gstore’ dark stores in 11 UK cities over to franchisees, who were asked to invest between £140K-£205k, depending on the size of the site.

Getir had claimed that it signed up its first UK franchisee in September 2021.

Turancan Salur, Getir general manager in the UK, stated: “We are very excited to be announcing the launch of our franchise model, it’s been a project we’ve been working on for some time following our initial announcement in September 2021.  We see the model as a great benefit to both the Getir brand and the franchisee, and look forward to working with our partners.”

Stores beat new delivery rival Getir on price and service

Describing the basis of its relationship with Franchisees, Getir stated in a franchise advert: “Franchisees have autonomy over the day-to-day running of their business, ensuring the pickers and couriers are working efficiently. Speed is our currency at Getir and so with this in mind, we aim to complete deliveries to our customers in approximately 10 minutes.”

The confirmation of its first franchise agreements in the UK came on the same day Getir was accreddited as a Real Living Wage employer. Salur added “This accolade recognises Getir as a company that pays its employees at least the real living wage, something that fits the franchise system too, ensuring franchisees can attract the very best talent locally.”

Getir was founded in Turkey in 2015 and now operates dark stores in the Netherlands, Germany, France, Spain, Portugal, Italy, the US, the UK and Turkey.
