Coronavirus: traffic light system installed at Spar Hillingdon

The coloured light system cost £300 and has freed up a staff member to perform other tasks

A Spar retailer has installed an electronic traffic light system on their doors to maintain social distancing measures between customers in store.

Sophie Towers, owner of Hillingdon Spar Convenience Store in Burnley, Lancashire, told Better Retailing: “Customers were taking advantage. Rather than having a member of staff stand at the door, the cashier now just flicks a switch to turn it green when someone leaves.”

Towers purchased disco lights and sourced a company to create the signage. “It only cost us £300. It’s worth it when you weigh up the cost of freeing up a staff member,” she said.
