Retailers in England and Northern Ireland could see the time taken for the Food Standards Agency (FSA) to offer guidance reduced as part of changes to its code.

Changes to the existing code will help the FSA “introduce a provision” to help it “be more responsive in issuing advice”.

The framework has also been altered to enable more environmental health and trading professionals to “undertake official food controls and other official activities, providing they can demonstrate they are
competent”.

FSA director for regulatory compliance, people and Northern Ireland Maria Jennings said: “There will be further reviews of the codes over the next few years to ensure we have a fit-for-purpose and sustainable regime.”
