One in 10 supermarket staff have experienced physical sexual harassment in their workplace, according to a survey by employment law firm Foot Anstey.

More than 1,000 retail staff were polled by Survation on behalf of the legal team. The organisation’s head of retail, Patrick Howarth, said the results “confirm the suspicions of anyone working in employment law”.

He warned that managers are often hired or promoted for technical skills, but do not possess the skills needed to recognise or respond to workplace harassment, such as by having a way for staff to raise concerns anonymously.
