Independent retailers brace for plastic ban

Plastic straws, drinks stirrers and cotton buds will be illegal to sell or distribute after April 2020, except in the aid of people with medical needs.

Environment secretary Michael Gove announced the move following a consultation which included the views of Slush Puppie, ACS and the British Soft Drinks Association.

Though many suppliers are expected to switch to eco-friendly products beforehand, compliance expert and partner at corporate law firm DWF David Egan warned: “Businesses may face cost pressures in the short term as they switch to eco-friendly alternatives.”

He said this would be “a particular issue for small and medium retailers”.
