OPINION: Harj Dhasee explains why it is key to partner up with the right people to grow your business

Harj Dhasee discussed the changing face of retail and why you need to partner with the right supply chain to protect your business.

These are really exciting time for independent retailers. The Tesco/ Booker merger has put a whole new spin on supply chain and if you don’t work with the right people, you are going to get left behind.

It’s really reassuring to see bigger players looking at Nisa as a viable option. I think it will up our game, especially in fresh and chilled, and new products.

If a Sainsbury’s Local franchise was available I’d jump at it because it would change the whole perception of our store.

Around here our customers are hugely into home deliveries from Ocado and Tesco. If we can get into that market, it’ll rocket our sales.

My only reservation would be if they do not allow flexibility on local produce, because that’s what we’ve become famous for; being able to supply fresh local food where the multiples can’t.

If you are already competing against a lot of other multiples, then it could be more beneficial to keep your independence. I don’t have any near me though.

There are great opportunities out there, but my advice to other retailers is to watch the market and choose wisely.

This investment in the sector is really empowering for independent retailers as we could soon be able to access competitive prices from Sainsbury’s or Tesco, as well as spot buy anything from the network of independent wholesalers across the UK.

There’ll still be fierce competition, if Tesco/ Booker offer a better deal, then people will leave. Likewise, independence is such a big part of Nisa.

Who you partner with is a massive decision that will have lasting effects on your business. Make sure you are putting yourself in the best possible position.
