Electric vehicle charging points installed free of charge as retail partners sought

'We keep saying that we want to have chargers in the most convenience places, and there’s nothing more convenient than a convenience store'

300,000 new electric vehicles in 2021 alone, as supermarkets take advantage

A multimillion-poundbacked electric vehicle (EV) company is looking to partner with independent stores to install charging points free of charge.

EVC received £165m in funding from Denham Capital to roll out 100,000 EV charge points across the UK at destinations, including retail.

Better Retailing understands retailers are expected to receive a profit share from revenues delivered from the EV charging points, potentially worth thousands of pounds in profit per year.

When asked what makes local shops suitable sites for charging points, EVC consultant Jordan Prescott told Better Retailing: “We keep saying that we want to have chargers in the most convenience places, and there’s nothing more convenient than a convenience store.”

Better Retailing understands EVC is offering two charger types: a fast charger, which uses between 7kW to 22kW of power, boasts a single or dual outlet, and has a user dwell time of more than two hours; and a rapid charger using 50kW to 300kW of power, with a dwell time of between 15 and 60 minutes.

Prescott described the move into independent retail as “really exciting”, and said “having an EV charging point helps drive traffic and footfall to local shops who have lot of services to offer those waiting for charge”.

EVC offers tailored financial plans to those interested.
