Cost of the average grocery shop to rise unless shoppers change purchasing habits

The trend is matched in independent convenience

Cost of living crisis shopping bill finances inflation

The cost of the average grocery shop is to rise by £3.04 to £24.93 unless shoppers change purchasing habits, according to the latest Kantar statistics.

Despite the rise, the company’s head of retail and consumer insight, Fraser McKevitt, said there was “no dramatic evidence” of diets changing, such as fresh buyers moving to cheaper frozen alternatives.

One change noted was the rise in own label (up 8.1% last month) at the expense of major brands (down 0.7%). McKevitt said retailers were expanding their own-label ranges.

The trend is matched in independent convenience, with Booker recently releasing Jack’s branded petfood lines, and Spar focusing on wider distribution of 100 core Spar-branded lines.
