Booker recalls Jack’s Summer Breeze air freshener over exploding cans

The recall affects batches purchased between 17 January and 14 February

Booker has recalled a batch its Jack’s Summer Breeze air freshener over “potential safety issues” after a can exploded in a retailer’s shop.

The recall notice was sent to stores on 20 Feb and concerns 6x240ml packs bought from Booker and Makro depots between 17 January and 14 February. Retailers have already reported instances of the cans exploding in stores and in a depot.

In the notice, the wholesaler said: “Booker would like to advise our customers of a product recall which may affect products purchased from either Booker or Makro branches.

“Booker is recalling the Jack’s Summer Breeze Odour Eliminating Room Fragrance product because we have identified a potential safety issue with a small quantity of the product which may cause the aerosol can to rupture.”

Steve Wilson, of Premier Tweedbank Stores in Galashiels, Scotland had one of the affected cans explode in his store. He told Better Retailing: “It blew everything off the shelf. A staff member was shaken because it was quite a loud bang.

“Luckily no customer was in the store or had one of the cans in their basket at the time. I’ve spoken to Booker about it who said they’re looking into potentially refunding me for the damaged stock and shelf.”

Retailers have been advised to remove the product from sale, dispose of it and take their receipt to their nearest branch for a refund.
