‘Autonomous’ convenience stores will be the norm within five years, according to the chief executive of Europe’s first tech company to create an ‘autonomous’ shop.

Portuguese grocery chain Sonae partnered with technology company Sensei to open a site in Lisbon late last month.

Customers scan a code to enter, pick up their items and walk out, with cameras tracking and charging the goods selected upon exit.

Chief executive Vasco Portugal said: “In the next five years this will be a market standard.”

He said the rollout in independent shops would be quicker than with self-checkouts as it removes queues, cuts waste by identifying abandoned items and improves sales by monitoring availability.
