Sunder’s in-store tech sees sales increase by 20%

A retailer who raised the bar in in-store technology earlier this year has seen sales soar by 20%.

As part of a raft of changes, Sunder Sandher of S&S One Stop installed a camera in his Leamington Spa store that can track a range of shopper statistics, introduced digital name tags for his staff and launched a free Wi-Fi service.

“We now open an hour earlier and close an hour later, which has led to a 20% rise in sales. It means the camera is set to pay for itself,” he said.

The camera, which cost £299, also matches shopper data to the weather so Sunder can see how hot or rainy days affect his footfall, which he can increase with deals on soft drinks or coffee.

The digital name tags welcome customers with a ‘Hello, how can I help?’ message and scroll through deals and promos.

He said: “We keep spirits behind the counter so they’re not that visible, but we’re promoting Smirnoff for £14 on the badges and that’s increased Smirnoff sales by 25%.”

The store’s free Wi-Fi received more than 1,100 hits in the first two weeks. When connecting, customers are directed to a welcome page, then a page with an offer on it and then are free to browse.

Sunder is now looking to connect the camera to his EPoS data to see what customers are spending in each section of his store. “Using data effectively gets rid of the guesswork and means that you can work smarter without working harder,” he said.“There are a lot of students near here so they come in to use it and buy other items when they are in,” he said.
