A newsagent who has built his business from scratch to become the 15th largest purchaser of newspapers in the country in just 30 years has been recognised in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours List.
Richard Brighton, who runs four Brighton News stores in Reading with his sons, was made an MBE “for services to the home news delivery trade”.
He said: “I heard about four weeks ago and have had to keep the secret, as you are asked to do. I’m absolutely amazed and still in shock.
“We run 15 vans, and have a newsbill of £40,000 per week with 4,000 customers. I believe half the reason for the decline in newspaper sales in that people have been allowed to stop having their paper delivered seven days a week. Delivery is god as far as we are concerned and we hang on to our customers, so our sales decline is nothing like the national picture.”
