Retailers should sort waste to avoid disposal charges

Retailers have been warned to separate their waste collection to avoid extra disposal charges.

Speaking about the issue of independent retailers being charged for waste collection, Allan Kane, general manager of waste services at disposal company NWH Group, told Better Retailing: “We are educating more customers on waste separation. Private companies have a limit on the weight of waste in bins and charge for going over this.”

He added: “Glass, cardboard or food can be heavy, and mixing them can add to the weight. Some companies also charge for separating these items.”

Midlothian-based NWH Group currently works with 200 convenience stores across Scotland and north-east England on waste separation.

At the end of last year, biscuit manufacturer Pladis launched a waste collection initiative for retailers in 500 locations across the UK.
