Planet Organic shows indies can match Amazon on deliveries

Small health store chain Planet Organic says its partnership shows independents can take on Amazon.

Small health store chain Planet Organic says its partnership with “the delivery industry’s answer to Uber”, Street Stream, shows independents can take on Amazon and multiples with online deliveries.

The partnership forms the retailer’s ‘Delivery on Demand’ service where customers can either have a range of more than 5,000 products delivered within a one hour time slot, or click and collect from the nearest Planet Organic store.

Street Stream uses a mobile app to co-ordinate cycle and van couriers with orders as they are placed. According to founder James Middleton, the company means independent food retailers can compete with the big guys on online orders.

He comments: “Same-day delivery is becoming the new industry standard set by big retailers like Amazon and Argos, but there’s no reason why independent retailers can’t compete.”

Customers using the service will place an order on Planet Organic’s website, the order is then picked by store staff and sent out for delivery. Each delivery costs between £9.50 and £15 for customers.

The luxury foods market faces serious disruption, with Amazon’s takeover of Whole Foods expected to partner Amazon’s distribution prowess with Whole Foods’ reputation for food quality.

Despite tech giants and multiples all trying to grow market share in luxury and health foods, the sector is still proving lucrative for convenience stores such as Battersea General Stores and Raw Store in Old Street, London, both of which opened this year.
