Wholesaler Parfetts has defended itself against accusations of tobacco stock issues, citing a 7% year on year increase in sales over the past 10 weeks.

Wholesaler Parfetts has defended itself against accusations of tobacco stock issues, citing a 7% year on year increase in sales over the past 10 weeks.

Customers complained to Retail Express that shelves had been half empty purchasing at depots for the past two months. Maqsood Akhtar of Blackthorne News & Food in Rotherham uses Parfetts’ Halifax and Sheffield depots.

He said it was having “a massive impact” with customers either “changing brand or changing shop.”

Parfetts operations director Andy Whitworth responded: “We're surprised to learn of these reports as we've seen minimal issues with availability at our depots, having made a commercial decision to carry high stocks of tobacco during transition to EUTPD2.”

He concluded, "Cigarettes are still ordered locally by our general managers, so that they are ideally placed to respond to local business needs, so there's no need for customers to be concerned."
