North West loses only Blakemore depot

Retailer customers of Blakemore in the North West will have to switch supplier after its Penrith depot closure.

Retailer customers of Blakemore in the North West will have to find a new supplier after it was announced that it is selling its Penrith depot to Bidfood.

The cash & carry’s change of ownership will see the site no longer provide goods for convenience retailers as Bidfoods is a foodservice only distributor.

Blakemore refused to comment on what alternative arrangements are available for its retail customers, but said it hopes the 14 staff members employed there will be taken on by the new owners.

“It is our intention for all former Blakemore Penrith employees to be offered employment with Bidfood,” said a Blakemore spokesperson.

The depot closure is the second this year, with its Hexham cash and carry site shut down in July with the company citing “unsustainable losses” as the reason. The company has also axed 14,621 lines, 384 suppliers, 100 retail club members this year in its drive to increase profitability.

According to BetterWholesaling, the offloading of its Penrith depot comes despite a £1million refurbishment this year and earlier announced plans to expand its offering in the North West.
