The government has stressed the importance of food prices and security amid Brexit in the latest parliamentary debate.

During last week’s discussion, Lord Bilimoria quoted British Retail Consortium chief executive Helen Dickinson: “The bigger threat to food inflation remains the risks of a chaotic no-deal Brexit, which would lead to higher prices.”

GlobalData analyst Thomas Brereton has recommended independents use new tactics to compete with multiples ahead of potential price rises.

“Independents don’t have the leverage over suppliers that chains do, so must use other tactics than lowering prices,” he said.

“Store environment, product range and adapting to changing shopper habits are vital to compete.”
