Retailer takes on local bus service after being forced to close on Sundays

Campaigning Newport retailer Jon Powell is taking on the powers that be after being forced to shut up shop on Sundays.

The retailer has banded together with local traders and a handful of councillors to take on Newport Transport after it changed its bus routes to bypass the city’s high street, decimating his Sunday trade.

“We never traditionally opened on Sundays, but we started home deliveries back in the summer and a shopping centre was opening here, so we thought we’d give it a go,” he said.

“It built up and it was alright until Christmas, when they stopped using the high street without a consultation. Last Sunday we only took £50. I’m campaigning the hell out of it.”

Newport City Council has called on Newport Transport to look into the issue.
