OPINION: Are German Christmas markets bad for local shops?

In the last decade the annual influx of German Christmas markets to the UK has increased significantly.  There are now around 15 markets set up in towns and cities across the country.  These traditional markets are growing in popularity with consumers drawn to their charm and festive atmosphere which has been good for some but not so good for others.

Local businesses situated nearby have been complaining of a huge slump in sales every time the Christmas markets come to town.  With the markets often placed in prime locations such as town centre squares consumers are drawn to them in droves instead of frequenting  the shops they usually do for the rest of the year.
