Booker has issued a product recall for all Elfbar 600 lines after the vaping brand was caught selling illegal disposable vaping products.

In a message sent to retailers today, and seen by Better Retailing, the wholesaler recommended stores remove all flavours of the Elfbar 600 disposable pods from sale immediately, and return stock bought through the wholesaler to their local Booker or Makro branch for a full refund.

The full list of varieties stocked by Booker and Makro include:

  • Apple Peach 20mg
  • Banana Ice 20mg

However, Bestway confirmed it has been advised not to take any action, due to it being an “e-liquid volume” issue and not a product quality issue, and therefore does not pose an “immediate risk to users”.

The wholesaler went on to reveal its suppliers “are in discussion with their trading standards primary agency and MHRA to determine the best action”.

An investigation by the Daily Mail newspaper last week revealed several of Elfbar’s ‘600’ line of disposable vapes sold in leading supermarkets including Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Morrisons had at least 50% more e-liquid than the 2ml legal limit.

As a result, the three supermarkets have issued a nationwide ban on the sale of all Elfbar products. Better Retailing understands, however that it has not yet been confirmed whether any other batches of product from the supplier are affected.

Elfbar “wholeheartedly” apologised for what it described as a manufacturing error. A statement from the company sent to stores read: “We wish to reassure you that we are working around the clock with all our supply chain partners to replace all stock so we can 100% ensure that no product incorporates the 3ml capacity tank in the UK. The new 2ml capacity batches will be arriving in the UK within 30 days.”
