Booker has completed the rollout of self-scan machines across its entire cash and carry network.

The machines were added to the Sheffield branch last month, completing the investment which first began as a trial at the firm’s Kettering, Lancaster and Lincoln depots in 2010.

The machines enable retailers to scan the barcodes of products with a scanner gun as they go through the cash and carry.

This allows them to see live updates of their total spend and decrease the time taken to check out. The gun is returned at the end of their shop where retailers are invoiced.

Although some store owners praised the efficiency of the devices, others reported issues where some store owners had nearly left a depot with high-value stock, such as vodka, after forgetting to scan the items.
