One of the UK’s first digital identification cards is to roll out across convenience stores, designed to provide retailers with more protection against fake IDs.

The Age Proof card is available in a 16+ option for energy drinks and medicine purchases, and an 18+ option for tobacco, with anticipated law changes next year making digital ID acceptable for alcohol. It is displayed on a smartphone through a barcode, which the retailer scans. To prove authenticity and prevent forgeries, it has a distinct logo and the barcode is randomised for each use.

The digital ID has been developed by Luciditi, which is working on rolling it out on a testing programme through convenience stores with Serve Legal. Chief executive Ian Moody said: “Fake ID has become more and more sophisticated, and has proven a major headache for retailers.”
