Retailers have been urged to sign a petition demanding more government financial support for struggling food and drink wholesalers.
“This has particularly impacted wholesalers serving bars, restaurants, catering firms and schools who have shut down due to losses in business over the past year.
Explaining the impact to retailers and their supply of products on Twitter, ACS chief executive James Lowman posted: “Retailers: this has everything to do with you. Without government support, our supply chain will be impacted and with it your choice of wholesalers and their ability to invest.
“I’ve signed this, I hope you do, too.”
The petition has so far received more than 6,700 signatures.
It says: “Food and drink wholesalers are a lifeline for vulnerable communities.
“Pre-Covid-19, wholesalers supplied 330,000 food service businesses and 72,000 grocery stores, and local high streets.
“They supported 1.4 million jobs – more than the next five biggest supermarkets.
“Given their importance for the public sector, and the entire hospitality industry, wholesalers will be intrinsic to Britain’s economic restart.
“Government has chosen to exclude them from much support. This must change. Bespoke financial support packages must be offered by government now.”Click here to add your support
