The top 100 independent convenience stores in the UK have been revealed by the Independent Achievers Academy (IAA).

The list is heavily weighted to retailers in a symbol group or franchise, with only 11% of stores being unaffiliated. It also reflects key convenience trends such as food to go and healthier food. Sixty-three per cent of shops sell store-baked goods and 77% sell health foods, up from 72% last year.

The IAA revealed that shoppers in top 100 stores spend more. The average basket spend at a top store is £7.74 compared to the £6.28 national average. This is a 9% improvement on the basket spend of last year’s top 100.

Steven Mahal, owner of four top 100 Premier stores, said: “It’s the first time I’ve put my stores forward. As I answered the questions I kept on coming up against areas of my business that needed attention but were not being looked at.”

More than 390 retailers took part in the benchmarking process. The list features 36 stores that are new to the top 100, with five of these making the list after taking part for the first time last year.

Twenty-six retailers have made the top 100 for the second time running and 12 have ranked for the third year in a row.

Sam Gunston, head of events at the IAA's parent company Newtrade, said: "Congratulations to everyone who consistently delivers a brilliant experience for their shoppers.

"This is one of my favourite moments of the year. It is a result of a rigorous programme of in-store assessments and a lot of hard work by independent shop owners that are aspiring for success. Benchmark your shop today to see how you compare with the top 100 and be in with a chance of making next year’s list."
