Shop layout – Academy in Action 2021 follow-up

Three months on, the IAA and Retail Express catch up with Dinesh Patel in Sawbridgeworth to uncover how improving his shop layout has made it easier for shoppers to navigate his store

Academy in action follow-up

Each year as part of the IAA’s Academy in Action programme, we visit 10 independent retailers to help them make simple improvements in their stores in order to increase sales and profits.

IAA advice

1Move impulse products to high-traffic areas to inspire additional purchases

2Group categories and related products together to improve flow

3Introduce a ‘wine of the week’ promotion to boost basket spend

The results

“Following the visit, we relocated our household products and moved the wines to be on the way to the till area so they are in a high-traffic area. They’re now also close to the savoury snacks, which has encouraged shoppers to pick up extra items when buying wine. We also started promoting different wines in the shop’s windows, adding signs explaining which cheeses they each pair with. As a result of the changes, our wines sales have increased by 22% and cheese sales have grown by 12%.”
