Retailers Reveal #7: Paul & Pinda Cheema – Availability

What is the most successful idea you’ve ever tried out in your business?
We’ve changed our stock a lot over the past six months and turnover has grown by 10% a week as a result. Offering meal deals and solutions and £1 lines have done especially well.

What is the best advice you have received?
Never think you are too good to take advice or that you know everything. If a rep visits we always listen to what they have to say and implement it.

Who is your retail inspiration?
Colin Graves from Costcutter. He always said: “I’ll give you the tools and the business, then it’s down to you to use it and that will determine how successful you will become.” He also said to give consumers what they want, and not what you want.

What do you think is the biggest missed opportunity that independent retailers should cash in on?
Chilled produce. A lot of retailers don’t bother with this category because they think it’s too hard, but it’s very lucrative.

What’s next for your business?
We want to remodel the front of the store, move the door to the side and bring fresh products together. In the long run we’d like to open more stores. I would also like to introduce more range analysis.
