Protein bars price comparison

Comparing the prices of protein bars

Behind the numbers

This week’s data shows just how competitive the protein bars category has become, with nearly all lines sold at the most-common price by most retailers. Despite this, there are some opportunities to drive profits.

Fifty-three per cent of retailers are charging up to £1.80 on Eat Natural Protein, more than double the most-common price of 89p – charged by 46%.

Mars Protein also offers scope for higher profits, with 43% of retailers charging up to £2.49, compared to the 56% charging £1.59.

Grenade’s Carb Killa range shows less potential. At least 70% of retailers charge each of the four Carb Killa products at their most-common price, which is £2.49 across the whole range. Similarly, 75% of retailers charge the most-common price of £1.59 for the Snickers Protein Peanut Butter flavour. However, this proportion falls to 60% when it comes to the original Snickers Protein variety.

Retailer views on protein bars

“With protein bars, the first brand that comes to mind is Grenade. We stock a range of flavours, as well as a range of own-label lines from Happy Shopper. We have them in a dedicated section alongside protein drinks. We also get in the Snickers, Mars, and M&M’s protein bars. They go well, but it depends on the customer. The more regular fitness customer tends to stick to Grenade bars, they seem like more of a specialist brand than Snickers and Mars, which are for customers occasionally looking for a healthier treat.”

Retailer views on protein bars Sue

Protein bars are a bit of a premium product for us. We keep them close to the till. There’s usually something on offer from Trek or Grenade. We only stock the popular lines. I tried Snickers and Mars protein, but they were not selling as much as Grenade. There’s a bit of confusion with those bars, and people looking for protein brands aren’t looking in the confectionery aisle. Grenade and Trek have better traction, people are more familiar with them. Sometimes Epicurium will bring PhD Smart Bars on offer and we’ll stock them.”
