Independent retailers face more competition from Iceland following the launch of the supermarket’s Swift convenience brand.

This week, the multiple’s managing director, Richard Walker, posted an image of a Swift store in Newcastle ahead of its official opening on 18 March.

According to analyst firm Shopfloor Insights, the range of the 1,700 sq ft site will include newspapers and magazines, and fresh and chilled.

“There will be a chain of stores trading as Swift, with [online shopping] seemingly part of the proposition. Plans for the first store indicate home delivery will be offered [alongside] news and magazines, chilled, ambient, frozen, fruit and vegetables, chilled BWS and a coffee machine. The store will have two selfcheckouts and a kiosk.”
