SodaStream seeks retail partners for exchange scheme
The new initiative aims cut single-use plastic consumption while increasing footfall and revenue from returning customers
SodaStream is looking to partner with retailers in a newly-launched convenience store gas purchase-and-exchange scheme.
The company’s home devices use pressurised canisters allowing customers to create sparkling water and other carbonated drinks at home. Retailers can sign up to become SodaStream exchange locations and then receive payments for each sale and canister exchange.
The company’s UK and Ireland general manager, Tiago Alves, explained: “Essentially, the customer buys the cylinder and sells the spare/exchange and once they return a full box of empties, they receive a rebate for every cylinder.”

Similar to home draft lager dispensers and ‘torps’ or Nespresso machines and capsules, customers are ‘locked into’ the eco-system, driving return purchasing from local stockists.
Initially launched in partnership with Nisa, the scheme is now open to all convenience stores.
“Our customers have fed back heavily that convenience stores are very desirable when it comes to accessing SodaStream and convenience is king,” said Alves.
He added that one canister makes 60l of sparkling water. “It’s a great story that convenience stores are also aiding the reduction in singleuse plastic,” he said.
