Drop in supermarket basket spend revealed

The average supermarket basket spend has declined year on year, despite total spend and transaction numbers growing.

The average supermarket basket spend has declined year on year, despite total spend and transaction numbers growing. 

Barclaycard figures for the month ending 19 January show a 1.3% drop in the average supermarket transaction value. However, the market performed ahead of clothing (-1.6%), restaurants (-2.3%) and the airline industry (-4.2%).

In transaction volumes, supermarkets achieved an 8.1% increase during the same period. Total spend also grew by 6.8%.

Barclaycard director Esme Harwood said: “Consumers will continue to prioritise value for money, as many have concerns about potential price increases on essentials.”
