For this week’s My Local Hero we spoke to Myjinder Braich about his popular range of wood and logs from a local tree surgeon
Name: Myjinder Braich
Store: Fairfield General Stores,
Product: Kindling wood and logs, £3.99 for a net
Where did you discover it?
Customers were coming in asking if we had firewood. I talk to my customers to see if there’s anything we can help them with, and often put people in touch with tradesmen here in the village. It’s quite a mature area and people prefer not to just pick someone out of the Yellow Pages, but instead to take someone’s recommendation. As a result, I’ve got to know quite a few tradesmen who I’ll recommend to my customers. The wood comes from a local tree surgeon who I’d got to know in this way. It made sense for both of us to sell his wood in my store.
Who buys it?
We’re in an affluent village so lots of the householders who live here will come in and buy it – especially older adults who want to sit by the fireside. And of course, we see sales go up a lot in winter.
Why is it so successful?
Because it’s an affluent area, lots of people have homes with open fires. They’re also keen to support local businesses. And it’s just a great-quality product which is excellent value for money. Our customers love it.
Next week we will be speaking to Vim Odedra from West Chiltington, about his range of local wines.
