OPINION: After the flood… came Tesco

Having been through a few development projects in my career one of the most significant lessons I have learned is that the process always takes longer than you first envisage so this YouTube video caught my attention. We will all remember the floods that Cumbria suffered last November, but are you aware that Tesco created an emergency store to serve the needs of the people of Workington north of the river after the bridge across the Derwent collapsed?

This video illustrates the story of the store’s construction and opening in just 13 days. For me though it illustrates the challenge that Tesco represents to us all in their ability to move at a speed that most of the independent sector would just look on in awe.

When a new bridge was opened Tesco closed the 13,300 square feet store and took it away.
