Retailers can now apply online for the unique codes required to buy and sell tobacco under HMRC’s track and trace legislation.
The regulation is designed to reduce illicit trade by requiring retailers who sell tobacco to have separate IDs, which must be obtained by 20 May. One identifies them as the business owner, while separate codes are required for every individual premises selling tobacco. The purchase or sale of tobacco is prohibited without the codes.
Retailers with multiple sites can register online now, while those with one shop can apply from 30 April. Although retailers can register themselves, national wholesalers have launched services to assist stores with track and trace.
