Retailers should voice their opinions on tobacco sanctions in a new government consultation, Imperial Tobacco has said.

The consultation, which launched last month, is seeking views on four potential new sanctions, including increased financial penalties for repeat offenders and a civil penalty for dealing in illicit tobacco.

The news comes as Imperial announced it has worked with the Federation of Wholesale Distributors to launch a new, wholesale-focused poster for its Suspect It? Report It! campaign, inspired by wholesaler evidence that drops in sales can indicate spikes in illegal trading.

“Where wholesalers have reported increased sales performance following sustained enforcement action in an area,” said Peter Nelson, anti-illicit trading manager at Imperial.
