Convenience market set to grow further but retailers must “weather the storm” from the discounters

The news from this week’s IGD Convenience Retailing forum was mostly positive, with the channel set to account for 24% of all of food and grocery sales by 2019. However, speakers warned the sharp rise of Aldi, Lidl and high street discounters could eat into this growth if convenience stores fail to invest and innovate.

Camelot launches Mega Friday draws

The operator of the UK National Lottery is to launch a series of special event draws on its EuroMillions game. The draws will be called Mega Friday and will take place on the last Friday of every month, with the first on 31 October. They will offer customers the chance to win one of 25 guaranteed £1m prizes, as well as private island getaways.

BAT offers another option for dark market

British American Tobacco expects to fit thousands of gantry doors before 6 April. Unlike JTI and Imperial Tobacco, retailers will be asked to contribute towards the cost of the doors. However, they will only be expected to dedicate between 30% and 40% of space to BAT. There will be no upfront cost and retailers can pay off their contribution through the MOR£ scheme.

Disney’s Frozen to drive newsstand sales

Panini is launching a second Frozen sticker series on 30 October that will be supported by a significant marketing campaign. Starter packs for the Enchanted Moments series are priced at £2.99 and include a sticker album. The stickers will be covermounted on Panini’s Disney Presents magazine on 30 October, which has a Frozen theme and is expected to be the top selling issue of the year.

Digital and mobile voucher schemes to play a big part in Coca-Cola Enterprises’ plans for indies

CCE’s new sales director for wholesale Simon Harrison claims this year’s partnership between its Coke Zero brand and digital voucher scheme i-movo has driven extra footfall for local stores, adding that the company will pilot more of these exclusive promotions in 2015.
