PERRO LOCOThe spiders we’re talking about are the spirit-flavoured ciders as featured in the 9 May issue of Retail Newsagent.

Debs Carter, Merrydown’s marketing director, says: “A trend which is likely to take hold in 2014 is the emergence of a new spirit-flavoured cider or ‘spiders’ sector.”

It’s a trend that Brothers cider has already tapped into with Perro Loco, a cider cut with lemon and tequila flavouring, and Ms Carter believes there is more to come.

“It’s certainly an opportunity we are looking at,” she says.

Merrydown forecasts that the sector will be worth in excess of £50m by 2018.
