Shoppers are set to ramp their confectionery gifting spend this spring, according to new research from Ferrero UK and KAM Media.

Gifting revenues are likely to rise ahead of Easter, while self-treating occasions could dip as shoppers watch their spending.

Thirty-seven per cent of shoppers will spend £20 and 35% will spend £50 on Mother’s Day and Easter respectively.

However, independent retailers will have to work hard to attract shoppers in the run-up to these events, as 62% of shoppers say supermarkets offer better value.

They should also be ready for last-minute shopping occasions, as 45% of shoppers say they rely on convenience stores to celebrate spring occasions.

The supplier added that shoppers begin thinking about Easter gifting four weeks in advance, so retailers should look to start displaying small eggs and chocolate models. This will encourage repeat purchase and consumption from customers.
