Nisa Local in Derbyshire unveils major store refit

The store has significantly increased its chilled capacity, with more space allocated to fresh produce and meats

Nisa Local in Mackworth, Derbyshire, has unveiled a major refit aimed at boosting food-to-go options and expanding its Co-op own-brand range.

A key highlight of the year-long project is the launch of Mackworth Deli, a new in-house food-to-go brand featuring a bespoke frozen milkshake concept, deli counter, ice slush and iSqueeze machine. It also includes a display of fresh cakes, brownies and savoury snacks – all tailored for local tastes.

The store has significantly increased its chilled capacity, with more space allocated to fresh produce and meats. Additional shelf space has also been created to support growing demand for local suppliers.

The visual refresh includes exposed black ceilings and upgraded LED lighting, which customers say makes the store feel bigger and brighter.

How does the refit help Nisa Local Mackworth standout?

The refit was led by director Neil Dosanjh alongside store manager Conor Malone.

Commenting on the project, Dosanjh said: “Our goal was to rethink the store, department by department, and really focus on how we could better serve the Mackworth community.

“With increased competition locally, it was the right time to differentiate ourselves, especially with fresh food and food-to-go.”

Dosanjh said he did not want an “off-the-shelf solution” but rather to create “something unique”.

“Mackworth Deli is our way of bringing a local feel to a growing category,” he added.

Mark Winfield, regional retail manager for Co-op Wholesale, added: “This refit is a fantastic example of how Co-op’s own brand, combined with innovation in food to go, can help a retailer stand out and grow.”
