Mail & NewstrAid team up to support Old Ben Homes
DMG Media and NewstrAid's investment will help Old Ben Homes continue to provide sheltered housing for the newstrade.
Daily Mail publisher DMG Media has teamed up with industry charity NewstrAid to pledge £165,000 to refurbish sheltered housing for former newstrade staff and their families.
The five-year commitment, which started in 2018, will include £75,000 from the publisher and is being used to help Old Ben Homes’ Seaford, East Sussex site continue to house former newsagents and those involved in the wholesale, distribution and circulation of newspapers and magazines.
The five bungalows were first set up by the precursor to DMG Media – Associated Newspapers in 1964. The rest of the funding, £90,000 will be provided by NewstrAid.
Angela Farrant, Seaford housing manager, said: “The residents at Seaford are extremely happy with their newly refurbished properties.” One resident, understood to be a former newsagent thanked both parties for “making our dreams come true,” by providing a “warmer, lighter and more modern” environment.
Head of circulation at Mail newspapers Shaun Jones said the company was: “delighted to continue to support the estate at Seaford.” NewstrAid chief executive Mike Mirams said its donation would: “help improve the lives of people from our own industry.”
The NewstrAid Benevolent Fund was started in 1839 to help newspaper street sellers in London and claimed Charles Dickens as a benefactor. Current or former news sellers facing hardship or distress can contact the charity for support on 0800 917 8616.
