February marks the start of a six month sales peak for gardening magazines, as the promise of warmer weather approaches.

The gardening sector is worth almost £11m in sales per year and independent retailers account for 22% of the market.

Customers who buy gardening magazines are most likely to be women over the age of 55 and of a higher disposable income.

In the months of February to July, Smiths News recommends stores hold a wider range of gardening titles, with the bestsellers displayed at the front of the newsstand.

BBC Gardeners’ World is the leading title, followed by Garden News, Amateur Gardening and Grow Your Own.

Sales in this category are often driven by covermounts – usually free seeds or equipment.
