The magazine market as a whole is declining, but this doesn’t have to be the case in your store.  As I wrote last week, the best independents are going head-to-head with Tesco and WHSmith.  Get it right in your store and you too can fulfill the potential of this category.

With this in mind, this week’s special issue of RN is dedicated to sharing best practice and helping independents make more money from magazines.

Convenience retailer Alkesh Pankhania pays a visit to magazine expert Peter Wagg’s store to learn about actively managing his range.  We also explore 10 sales opportunities you might be missing, from following seasonal trends to making the most of HND.  And we catch up with the industry schemes that are helping grow newsstand sales by up to 5%

There are two big magazine launches in the news this week.  Northern & Shell is giving retailers 90% of the cover price of TV Pick for six weeks as an incentive to promote the title.  And Hachette is doing its biggest ever partwork print run – more than 400,000 – of Make & Bake with Peppa Pig, featuring the triple boost of news stand success ingredients – partwork, kids’ title and home baking.

All these points demonstrate that great independents are still committed to growing sales and have faith that magazines have a long future ahead.  And there are opportunities out there if you look in the right place.
