Video assistant referee causes late-papers concern
Retailers are concerned the new football season could lead to late news-paper deliveries with video assistant referee (VAR) extending matches.
VAR will be introduced in the Premier League for the first time and could prolong matches by up to 15 minutes, forcing extended cut-off times.
Home news deliverer Andrew White told betterRetailing: “In March, an extension was applied for a match, and the morning papers were late, but 75% didn’t have the final score. Evening games are often on Friday and papers are later on Saturday, so longer matches will compound the issue.”
A major publisher told betterRetailing it did not envisage VAR impacting its distribution during the new football season.
