The 12-week report from Kantar revealed that local shopping trends, driven by lockdown, gave independent and symbol group stores their highest market share in more than a decade, at 2.5% – worth £781m.

Over the same period, multiples achieved annual sales growth of 13.4%. Ocado achieved the highest increase of any multiple, up 32.5%, followed by Co-op at 30.8%.
Kantar head of retail Fraser McKevitt forecast sales would remain buoyant. “People have been working their way through their store cupboards and some will now be spending a bit more,” he said. “Extra meals, snacks and drinks will mean sales at grocers could be up 12% over 2020.”
