Age-check compliance increases

Police sting operations are driving greater age-check compliance when it comes to knife sales by grocery stores, according to Ed Heaver, director of test purchasing firm Serve Legal.

The number of knife test purchases carried out by the company increased by 76% in 2018, mostly in supermarkets and hardware shops. 

Successful age challenges by cashiers rose to 82%, compared with 57% five years ago.

Heaver told Better Retailing: “There’s greater focus from the government and press.Police actions and sting operations are driving improvements in retailer age-check compliance.”
