Food hygiene inspections may drop says FSA

'Progress is being constrained by resource and the availability of qualified professionals'

Independent retailers could see a fall in food hygiene inspections due to a lack of resources, a new report has warned.

Last month, the Food Standards Authority and Food Standards Scotland released a joint report detailing the challenges inspectors are facing.

The report said: “While food safety standards have largely been maintained, both organisations recognise there are significant risks ahead.”

It also highlighted particular areas of concern. “There has been a fall in the level of local authority inspections of food businesses. The situation is in the process of being repaired, but progress is being constrained by resource and the availability of qualified professionals,” it said.
