Bestway’s first premium Tippl site closes permanently

The brand was a premium format launched by Bestway in 2020.

Bestway’s first store launched under the premium Tippl format has permanently closed, after nearly two years of trading.

The site in Garforth, Leeds, was listed as “permanently closed” on Google Maps and on the Bargain Booze website.

Similarly, a web address on its Instagram page was no longer working, while an answerphone message stated that the store’s contact number was incorrect.

The store was opened in 2020 as an extension of the Wine Rack format. It combined an extensive range of wines, spirits and beer with a premium convenience offer. To help attract footfall, it also offered hot food to go and fresh coffee.

It launched alongside BBs, a more affordable convenience format.

Commenting on the closure, a Bestway spokesperson said: “The Tippl store in Garforth was mobilised as a test and learn pilot, underpinned by the core objective of enabling us to benefit from greater understanding of local demographics, as well as taking learnings around the offer itself.

“And the timing of Covid was unfortunate as when the store was planned and opened, no-one was aware of the trajectory of the Pandemic, which ultimately impacted on the performance of the store and consumer shopping behaviours.

“The pilot has been enormously useful to us in learning more about how we can mobilise this hybrid offer.  We are now in the process of reviewing the proposition of the Tippl branded stores and believe there are potential sites elsewhere in the estate.  We will be reviewing these on a store-by-store basis in the months to come.”
