Amazon Fresh expansion halted due to poor sales

Amazon has put on hold the expansion of its Amazon Fresh concept, due to a poor sales performance.

According to The Times, the internet giant will not be looking to open more sites as it has reported poor sales during the tough economic climate. There are currently 18 branches in England, with the majority based in London. Each site has special sensors allowing customers to pick up items and then walk out with their groceries without having to visit a cashier. The transaction is completed through an associated Amazon account shortly after their visit.

The Times added that the only further openings this year will be in areas that Amazon has already committed to a lease. The firm had previously outlined plans to open hundreds of Fresh sites.
