Family weekly spending on lottery products fell by more than 16% in the past 12 months, with the average weekly spend dropping from £1.80 to £1.50.

The Government’s annual family spending index released last week revealed trends in key convenience categories.

Alcohol, tobacco and fresh fruit sales all jumped by 5%, confectionery spending grew 14% and newspaper sales remained stable, with the average family spending £1.50 a week on the news trade.

The dip in lottery sales was more than offset for retailers with a good food-to-go offering, with family spending on food consumed outside of the home increasing by nearly 19%.
